The Things We Were Told About Ourselves

Every attic in our "houses" contains old stories.
Mine certainly does.
Some were handed to me by teachers.
Some by family.
Some by society.
Some I invented all by myself.
Stories like:
"You're not artistic."
"You're too old."
"You're not the adventurous type."
"People like you don't do things like that."...
The strange thing about old stories is that we stop questioning them.
They become furniture.
They sit in the corner collecting dust while we quietly arrange our lives around them.
Until one day we ask:
Wait.
Who put that here?
And do I still want to keep it?
The older I get, the more I realize that freedom is not only about adding things to our lives.
Sometimes it's about removing things.
Especially old stories that no longer fit.
Perhaps there is a belief sitting in your attic that deserves a closer look.
And perhaps it is gathering dust for a reason.

What old story are you ready to question?
